Presidential awards are given by the president of the university, and include the Thomas Hart Benton Medallion, the Distinguished Service Medal, and the President’s Medal. These awards honor distinction in scholarship, service, or a sustained relationship with Indiana University. 

The President's Medal for Excellence

The President’s Medal for Excellence is awarded to individuals at Indiana University for outstanding academic, artistic or professional accomplishments or to individuals for exceptional service to the university.

The medal is made of silver and is a replica of the jewel of office of the president of the university. It hangs from a red ribbon and is accompanied by a rosette. A formal parchment is also presented with it. It is awarded by decision of the president of the university in consultation with members of the university and others.

The Thomas Hart Benton Mural Medallion for Distinguished Achievement

The Thomas Hart Benton Mural Medallion for Distinguished Achievement is awarded for meritorious national or international service to Indiana University, or for exceptional achievements in any field or area in any part of the world, that reflects the most central values and principles of Indiana University and which contributes to the betterment of humanity. 

The medal is made of bronze and on once side has scenes from the famous Thomas Hart Benton murals in the Indiana University Auditorium. It hangs from a white ribbon and is accompanied by a rosette. A formal parchment is also presented. It is awarded by decision of the president of the university in consultation with members of the university and others.

The Distinguished Service Medal

The Distinguished Service Medal is awarded to individuals at Indiana University to recognize sustained distinction in administrative and other service to the University over an extended period of time or notable contributions that improve the university in major ways.

The medal is made of silver and depicts the university seal in the center surrounded by a circle of red. It hangs from a red ribbon. A formal parchment is also presented with it. It is awarded by decision of the president of the university in consultation with members of the university and others.
