Yu Shaoyi worked at Nanjing University from 1950 to 2000. He was named as the vice director of Foreign Literature Studies Office, the vice director of European and American Culture Studies Office, the director of Foreign Languages Department and then the vice-chancellor of Nanjing University. From 1980 to 1992, he was the member of Editorial Board of the foreign language textbooks of Higher Schools in the National Education Commission; the vice chairman of National Higher Education Foreign Literature Research Institute; the vice chairman of China Russian Language Research Institute; and the consultant of Jiangsu Translators' Association.

He has visited over 50 universities in U.S., Britain, Germany, Japan, Soviet, Singapore and Malaysia, etc. Yu Shaoyi graduated from Leningrad University.
