Through mergers and acquisitions in travel, hotels, real estate, life insurance, and management of sports, facilities and special events, Elmore created Elmore Sports Group, a successful conglomerate. Prior to that venture, he worked at a law firm and was president of a life insurance company. He established the Elmore Sports Group in 1969, and it is compromised of ownership of various minor leagues baseball and hockey teams, facility management companies, and numerous other companies. Prior to this company, Elmore was a partner with McBride, Baker, Wienke, and Schlosser in Chicago from 1958 to 1968.

Throughout his career, Elmore has been involved in the community. In 1983, the White House appointed Elmore to the Travel and Tourism Advisory Board in the Department of Commerce. He was a member of the Young Presidents Organization from 1969-1984, and served as President of the International Fraternity of Phi Gamma Delta. Elmore also has served on the Joint Committee of the National Association of Professional Baseball since 1991.

Elmore, an Indiana native, graduated from IU in 1955 and the IU Law School in 1958. Elmore and his son fund scholarships for the Elmore Entrepreneurship Law Clinic, a joint venture between the IU Maurer School of Law, which has inducted him into its Academy of Law Alumni Fellows, and the IU Kelley School of Business, which presented him its Distinguished Entrepreneur Award. Elmore is also an Honorary Director of the Indiana University Foundation.
