His previous experience included appointments at SUNY Farmingdale, Hamilton College, Franklin and Marshall College, Columbia University, and the University of Connecticut.

Lewis completed a BA in history from Carleton College, an MLS from Columbia University, and earned certificates of advanced study in librarianship from the University of Chicago and Columbia University. His book, Reimagining the Academic Library, was published by Rowman & Littlefield in 2016.
