William Holmes McGuffey was an influential American educator who was a professor at Miami University and president of Cincinnati College and Ohio University before lecturing as professor of moral philosophy at the University of Virginia from 1845-1873. He is the author of one of the nation's first and most widely used series of textbooks, the McGuffey Reader, which became the standardized reading text for most public schools in the country in the second half of the nineteenth century.
