Wright was born in Bloomington, Indiana. He attended Indiana University and graduated in 1839. After studying law in Rockville, Indiana, he was admitted to the bar in 1840 and began a legal practice in Iowa. He was elected to the Iowa state senate from 1849-1851, and was a co-founder of the College of Law at University of Iowa, where he served as professor from 1865-1871.
