BIOGRAPHY

J. Michael Shaughnessy earned his B.A. and M.A. degrees in mathematics from LeMoyne College in New York, and Indiana University. He received a doctorate in mathematics education from Michigan State University.

Shaughnessy has spent most of his career as a professor of mathematics education at Portland State and Oregon State universities. He brings nearly 40 years of experience in teaching mathematics at all levels in the United States, as well as considerable work with teachers, students, and professional organizations from many other countries. He also has held visiting professorships in Spain, Australia, and New Zealand.

Shaughnessy is a member of the Mathematical Association of America, the American Statistical Association, the American Educational Research Association, the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators, and TODOS: Mathematics for ALL. Shaughnessy is also the President-elect of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

In 2006 Shaughnessy received the Lifetime Award for Service—Oregon Mathematics Education Hall of Fame.
