BIOGRAPHY

A three-time graduate of IU Bloomington, Nick Kellum earned a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education in 1967, a Master of Science degree in physical education in 1971, and a Doctorate of Education in higher education in 1986.

Kellum, retired dean of the IU School of Physical Education and Tourism Management at IUPUI, began his career at IUPUI in 1969. Early on, he served as the campus's first athletics director. Following a year as acting dean of the School of Physical Education and Tourism Management, Kellum began in 1978 as permanent dean and continued in that role until his retirement in 2009. Because of his vision to draw the Pan American games to Indianapolis, IUPUI was able to obtain funding from the Lilly Endowment, the Krannert Trust and the Indiana State Government to fund the expansion of IUPUI's sporting facilities. He oversaw construction of the IU Natatorium and the IU Michael A. Carroll Track & Soccer Stadium.

For his service to IUPUI, Kellum received the campus's Maynard K. Hine Award in 2008 and the IUAA President's Award in 2009. He later received the IUPUI Spirit of Philanthropy Award in honor of the P. Nicholas Kellum Scholarship and the P. Nicholas Research Award, which support both the students and faculty of the School of Physical Education and Tourism Management.
