Smith came to IU from Owensboro, Kentucky, and played football from 1957-59 for the late coach Phil Dickens. In 1958 and 1959, he was the team's leading rusher; in 1958 the leading scorer; and captain in 1959. Following graduation he served in the U.S. Army, returning to IU to work for the athletic department and the IU Foundation.

In 1966, Smith went back to Owensboro to work for Texas Gas Transmission Corporation, where he now serves as senior vice president of administration.
