Phillip Buck, who played basketball at IU from 1949-51, was recruited by the late Branch McCracken from Rossville High School, where he was an All-State guard. Following graduation, he went into the coaching profession and was head coach at Madison Heights High School in Anderson.

Buck's teams have won 11 sectionals, four regionals, and one semi-state, and he has coached former IU basketball players Bobby Wilkerson, Ray Tolbert, Winston Morgan and Stew Robinson. In 1983 Buck was elected to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame.
