W. Wayne Townsend earned a B.S. in 1951 from Purdue University's School of Agriculture, and the 1997 Bob F. Jesse Medal from IPFW.

He is a hog producer who farms 2,200 acres in Blackford and Grant counties. He served in the Indiana House of Representatives in 1959-61 and 1963-66 and in the Indiana Senate from 1971-87. He was the Democrats' 1984 nominee for governor. He also has worked in education, as a trustee for Earlham College for eight years, and for fifteen years for Purdue University .Townsend is also the grandson of former Indiana Governor M. Clifford Townsend.
