Dr. Jack Allen Sunderman came to IPFW in 1965 and retired as associate professor emeritus of geology in 1993. He received degrees from Purdue University (B.S., 1951), Indiana University (Ph.D., 1963), and University of Michigan (M.S., 1965). He was the first chair of the department of earth and space sciences. He is best known for his direction of the excavation of a mastodon skeleton found two miles south of Angola in the early 1970's. His area of research is stratigraphy, Silurian reefs, geological photography and sedimentary dikes.

Sunderman passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2011, at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne. He was 82.
