Dr. Thelburn Laroy Engle was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was on the staff of the Fort Wayne State Developmental Center before coming to the Indiana University center in 1938. He retired June, 1972 as professor emeritus of psychology. He received the 1985 Ralph E. Broyles Medal. He received degrees from Butler University (A.B., 1922), Northwestern University (M.A., 1924) and Indiana University (Ph.D., 1937). Dr. Engle died in April 1994.

Dr. Engle was the author of the book, Psychology: Its Principles and Applications, published in 1945.
