BIOGRAPHY

James B. Serrin Jr. is a retired professor and mathematician known for his contributions to continuum mechanics, nonlinear analysis, and differential equations. Serrin obtained his doctorate in mathematics from Indiana University in 1951, and began teaching at University of Minnesota in 1956. Serrin remained at Minnesota for the rest of his career, retiring as Professor Emeritus of Mathematics in 1995. He received the Indiana University College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Alumni Award in 1979 and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1980.
