Mildred Stewart Richey was a graduate of Seymour High School and a 1935 graduate of IU, magna cum laude. She was the recipient of the Susan Butler Award for outstanding woman graduate.

Throughout her life, Richey was involved in many social and civic organizations, including: Chi Omega sorority, Phi Beta Kappa, League of Women Voters, and IU Arts and Science Board. She was named Sagamore of the Wabash, and served on Indiana Governor Handley's State Personnel Board.
