Born in 1902, Dr. Frank Ramsey completed his medical education at the Indiana University School of Medicine, and set up a medical practice during the Great Depression. A surgeon trained in Boston's Lahey Clinic, Dr. Ramsey served in the United States Army on the Pacific front during World War II.

Prior to private practice, Dean Gatch appointed Dr. Ramsey, then a senior surgery resident from Indianapolis City Hospital to be in charge of the Indiana University School of Medicine surgical pathology laboratory, which consisted of two rooms in the basement of Emerson Hall, in 1931.
