BIOGRAPHY

The first woman elected as President of Liberia or of any African country, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf is recognized as a lifetime champion of human rights and democratic governance. Her strong will and determination earned her the nickname of Africa's "Iron Lady." She rose from humble beginnings to have a distinguished career spanning nearly four decades. Her efforts to promote peace, justice, and democracy in the face of adversity have been recognized all over the globe.
