BIOGRAPHY

John Merle Coulter was President of Indiana University from 1851-1893; he was recommended by his predecessor for the position.

Prior to his presidency at IU, he was president at Hanover College and Wabash College. After leaving IU, he became president of Lake Forest University. His career would also encompass the realm of scientist, as head of the department of botany at the University of Chicago, and advisor of Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research in New York.

In 1920, Coulter was awarded an honorary degree from Indiana University, and in 1959, the university named a dormitory hall in the Graduate Residency Center in his honor.
