BIOGRAPHYWalter P. Helmke was born on December 28, 1927 in Fort Wayne, Indiana to Walter E. and Wilma L. Wehrenberg-Helmke.
Helmke was the prosecuting attorney of Allen County from 1962-1970, and was a member of the state senate.
Helmke served as a member of the Indiana-Purdue Foundation at Fort Wayne, and on the chancellor's advisory board. He was also an instructor of political science at IPFW.
Helmke received the Ralph E. Broyles Medal in 1980.
Helmke is the son of the first recipient of the Ralph E. Broyles Medal in 1975, and is the father of the 2000 Ralph E. Broyles Medal winner, W. Paul Helmke, Jr.
