John Marcus Dickey

A native of Indiana, Marcus Dickey was born on September 26, 1859 in Fayette County. From 1880-1883, he attended the Indiana State Normal School in Terre Haute, Indiana. From 1887-89, he was instructor of literature and history at the Fairmont Indiana Academy.

He move to Colorado and served as principal in the Colorado public school system in Colorado Springs from 1890-92. Dickey served as biographer and secretary to the famous Hoosier poet, James Whitcomb Riley between the years 1896-1906. He remained associated with Riley until Riley's death in 1916.
