BIOGRAPHY

David Hutchinson graduated from Edinburgh University, Edinburgh, Scotland. His first marriage was to Mildred Mann in 1838 (Marion County, Indiana). He graduated from the Ohio Medical College in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1842 and
began practicing medicine in Ohio. Hutchinson gained U.S. citizenship in 1842. He earned a Master of Arts degree from Indiana State University in 1854. He married Elizabeth Clark Brownell in 1856 in Shelbyville, Indiana.

Hutchinson served as president of the Indiana State Medical Society in 1860. He continued to practice
medicine in Putnamville and Mooresville, Indiana until which time he was appointed Indiana Military Agent at
Nashville, Tennessee in 1862 by Indiana Govenor Oliver P. Morton. As Indiana Military Agent, he was medical doctor of Indiana Regiments. Governor Morton commissioned Hutchinson as surgeon of the 30th Regiment of Indiana Volunteers in 1863. He resigned from the Union Army that same year due to disability. He practiced medicine in
Moooresville, Indiana until 1865, when he moved to Iowa. Hutchinson was elected to the Des Moines Iowa Academy of Science in 1885. He died in Council Bluffs, Iowa in 1891.
