Dr. Jerome Adams, M.D., '02, was the 2016 recipient of the IU School of Medicine Early Career Achievement Award, which singles out graduates who make a quick mark in medicine. Dr. Adams currently serves as commissioner for the Indiana Department of Health. Within the first 18 months of his appointment, Dr. Adams supervised the department's efforts to confront an HIV outbreak in Scott County. Under his direction, the Department of Health also increased its efforts to lower the State's infant mortality rate.

Dr. Adams is an anesthesiologist at Eskenazi Hospital and an assistant professor in the Department of Anesthesia at the IU School of Medicine. He serves as Chairman of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee at Eskenazi, and leads the Professional Diversity Committee for the American Society of Anesthesiologists.
