Rebecca L. Spang, the Ruth N. Halls Professor in the College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of History at IU Bloomington, was named a Class of 2023 New America Fellow on Sept. 20.
New America supports changemakers — journalists, educators, filmmakers and researchers — who are working to shape the conversation on the critical issues of today.
Spang researches, writes and teaches about money, revolutions, consumption and politics from 1750 to today. She is the author of two prize-winning books: “The Invention of the Restaurant: Paris and Modern Gastronomic Culture” and “Stuff and Money in the Time of the French Revolution.” Spang is working on a new book, “The Money of the Poor.”
She has also reviewed books for the Times Literary Supplement, and has written for the Atlantic, The Washington Post, Financial Times and Los Angeles Review of Books.
Earlier this year, Spang received the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship for 2022.
