Identifying areas of historical significance
A legacy program of IU’s bicentennial celebration, this program allows the university to engage with people on all of IU’s campuses by commemorating exceptional people, places, events, and organizations that are a part of IU’s history and have had a notable impact on the state, nation, or world. IU historical markers consist of a bronze plaque mounted on a limestone boulder. The program features an annual nomination process that allows anyone in the IU community to nominate a topic.
Marker applications are reviewed by a committee chaired by the University Historian. Successful nominations must be approved by the committee and campus and university leadership. The program is designed not to be exclusively celebratory, allowing markers to address controversial elements of IU’s history.
