The most prestigious appointment offered by IU, the title of Distinguished Professor, honors outstanding scholarship, artistic or literary distinction, or other achievements that have won significant recognition by peers.
This honor serves as an acknowledgement by the university of an IU faculty member’s outstanding accomplishments within their academic discipline. Since the creation of the distinguished title in 1953, worthy individuals are nominated by fellow faculty members and recommended to the Board of Trustees by the Distinguished Professor Selection Committee and with the endorsement of the president of the university. The achievements of the Distinguished Professors are remarkable and abundant.
