The most prestigious appointment offered by IU, the rank of distinguished professor honors outstanding scholarship, artistic or literary distinction, or other achievements that have won significant recognition by peers.
This honor serves as an acknowledgement by the university, as well as their fellow faculty members and current and former students, any of whom may nominate deserving honorees. Their achievements are remarkable and abundant, like the many national and international accolades received by Distinguished Professor of English Samrat Upadhyay, or the fellowship and national academy memberships of Psychology and Brain Sciences Distinguished Professor Richard Shiffrin.
Nominations for distinguished professorships may be made by faculty, alumni, and students and are evaluated by a committee who then make recommendations to the president. Recipients are part of the Alliance of Distinguished and Titled Professors.
