About Elliot J. Androphy

Dr. Androphy received his B.A. from Brandeis University in 1975 and his M.D. from the University of Rochester in 1979. He completed his residency at the University of Pittsburgh Health Sciences Center in 1982. Dr. Androphy began his career at the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) in 2010 as a Kampen-Norins professor and chairperson of the Department of Dermatology.

Before joining the IUSM faculty, Dr. Androphy completed a fellowship with the Dermatology Branch of the National Cancer Institute where he worked with Dr. Douglas Lowy to investigate molecular biology and oncogenic properties of papillomaviruses in the newly created Laboratory of Cellular Oncology. Following this, he moved to Tufts Medical School as an assistant professor and progressed to professor and vice chair of the Department of Dermatology. In 2001, Dr. Androphy was appointed the first Barbara & Nathan Greenberg Chair and served as professor and vice chair for Research in the Department of Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Dr. Androphy’s research focuses on the study of human papillomaviruses (HPV), a family of viruses that cause genital warts, cervical and other lower genital tract cancers, and a subset of head and neck cancers. The research is designed to understand viral gene expression and replication, induction of oncogenic transformation by viral gene products, and to develop novel strategies for the medical treatment of these infections.

Dr. Androphy is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology and the Indiana Academy of Dermatology. He received a national award in 2016 from Cure SMA, a coalition of stakeholders working to improve the lives of people struggling with spinal muscular atrophy.
