- IU Indianapolis Spirit of Philanthropy Award - 2024
- IUPUI Maynard K. Hine Medal - 2011
The IUPUI Office of Alumni Relations is recognizing the late Dan Henkel for years of dedicated volunteer service and philanthropic support. Dan earned his BA with High Distinction in 1984 from the School of Liberal Arts, majoring in Communication & Theatre.
A lifetime member of the IU Alumni Association, Dan served for many years on various alumni boards including the IUPUI Alumni Council, the School of Liberal Arts Alumni Board, and the IU Alumni Association’s Executive Council. Dan volunteered as a judge for the IUPUI Top 100 Outstanding Students Award and put together alumni teams for the IUPUI Regatta. Dan also served on the boards of several other nonprofit organizations, including the Public Relations Society of America, the Portfolio, the Indianapolis Children’s Choir, and the Indiana Parks Alliance. In 2011, Dan received the Maynard K. Hine medal, named for the first chancellor of the Indianapolis campus, the Maynard K. Hine Award recognizes individual alumni who have made significant contributions in support of the IUPUI campus and its alumni program.
Dan was also a true family-man at heart, and you would be hard pressed to find him at an alumni event without Beth, his beloved wife of 42 years. Dan was a loving father to their three children, Sarah, Abby, and Tom whom he often talked about with great pride and tenderness. Dan passed away unexpectedly last April, and his wife Beth is with us today to accept the award on his behalf.
