Jeffrey A. Schwartz was a long-time veteran of the U.S. Army, having served from 1987 to 2008. He worked as a combat engineer and surgical nurse during Operation Desert Storm and Iraq. For his work in the Army, he won the Army Commendation Medal for Desert Storm.
In the 1990s, he left the service and moved back to his hometown of Kokomo, IN with his family, where he began his studies for his B.S. in Nursing. During his time at IU-Kokomo, Schwartz was active in the nursing community, serving as the vice president of IUK's Student Nurses program and as a board member of the Indiana Association of Student Nurses. Schwartz also participated in other campus organizations such as the Honor Society and associate justice of the Student Supreme Court. He interned at Wishard Health Services and graduated in 1998 with honors.
In 2001, Schwartz returned to the U.S. Army as an Officer and surgical nurse at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and served tours with the 3rd Infantry Division in the advance towards Baghdad, Iraq. He then returned to Walter Reed as a nursing instructor and was medically retired in October 2008. Schwartz then moved back to Indiana with his family and continued his involvement with disabled veterans organizations until his death in 2013.
