Bill Stephan holds a B.S. in economics from Arizona State University and a J.D. from the Indiana University McKinney School of Law.
Stephan joined the IU administration in 2000. He served as IU's vice president for government relations and economic engagement until his retirement in September 2022. As VP, he oversaw all of the university's functions linked to economic engagement and federal relations. Stephan was responsible for coordinating and connecting the university's vast intellectual and creative resources with strategic opportunities that foster Indiana's economic growth.
Indiana University has honored Stephan with numerous honors and awards. He received the IU Foundation's Presidential Medallion in 2005, and the IU Bicentennial Medal in 2019 in recognition of his distinguished service as vice president for government relations and economic engagement at Indiana University. He received the President's Medal for Excellence in 2021, and in 2022, IU president Pamela Whitten awarded Stephan the Distinguished Service Medal, honoring his incredible contributions to the university.
