Three generations of the Maurer family shape the landscape of Indiana University and their legacy extends far beyond the family tree. This three-generation commitment is a testament to the passion and dedication to IU that begins with Michael "Mickey" Maurer (JD ’67, LHD ’16) and his wife, Janie.
After graduating from Indiana University Law School in 1967, Mickey practiced tax law with Roberts and Holland in New York City for one year before moving back to Indiana and working for Gene B. Glick, an apartment developer, as his feasibility analyst. Mickey began his career as a business attorney in Indianapolis on June 4, 1969. Mickey’s drive led him to pioneer the local communication and entertainment industries. He now serves as chairman of the board of corporations in the areas of publishing and banking. Instrumental in the business and philanthropic communities, Mickey’s generosity improves countless lives throughout Indiana.
Alongside Janie, Mickey founded Mickey’s Camp in 2001, a weeklong summer camp experience for adults at Bradford Woods that has raised more than $3 million for central Indiana charities. Indiana University, and particularly its Law School, has been a focal point of the Maurers’ generosity for decades. In 2008, Mickey and Janie established a scholarship fund that was so transformational that the Law School was named in his honor. In the 15 years since, that gift has given more than 800 law students a life-changing Maurer Scholarship that provided the opportunity to earn a law degree from one of the nation’s top public law schools with little to no debt.
Mickey and Janie are most proud of their family. All three of their children earned degrees at IU and married Hoosiers: Todd (JD ’97) and Linda (BA ’95) Maurer, Jill (BS ’97) and Matthew (BA ’97) Burnett, and Greg (BS ’98) and Megan (BS ’04) Maurer. All continuously support IU, generously giving to and sharing their time and expertise with their communities. That lineage now extends to Mickey and Janie’s nine grandchildren, three of whom– Alexis Maurer (senior, School of Education), Tyler Burnett (junior, Kelley School), and Cameron Burnett (freshman, School of Education) – are current IU Bloomington students. Indiana University is a better and stronger institution because of the Maurer family.
