- IU Indianapolis Spirit of Philanthropy Award - 2023
In its 78-year history, the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) has raised more than $4.8 billion and helped more than 450,000 students to not only attend college, but also thrive, graduate, and become leaders. UNCF’s mission is to build a robust and nationally recognized pipeline of underrepresented students who, because of UNCF support, become highly qualified college graduates. They also seek to ensure that their network of 37 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) is a respected model of best practices in moving students to and through college. UNCF envisions a nation where all Americans have equal access to a college education that prepares them for rich intellectual lives, competitive and fulfilling careers, engaged citizenship, and service to our nation.
Today, UNCF supports more than 60,000 students at more than 1,100 colleges and universities across the country, including IUPUI. In the 2020–21 school year, UNCF awarded more than $470,000 to students from Indiana. Since the academic year beginning in 2017 through spring 2022, UNCF awarded 20 scholarships to IUPUI students totaling $357,578. The IUPUI Division of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion is among the proud sponsors of UNCF’s Indianapolis Area Office Annual Masked Ball. The event welcomes dignitaries, civic leaders, volunteers, public officials, and the larger community who support UNCF’s mission of investing in better futures for us all by getting more students to become college graduates.
