Associate Instructor Sarah Fischer is a driven and innovative instructor known for her successful integration of creative, immerse learning experiences in the classroom. As a doctoral student in Rhetoric in the English Department at Indiana University Bloomington, Fischer has taught numerous undergraduate courses from Fall 2019 to Summer 2023, including Reading, Writing, and Inquiry, Public Communication, and Topics in Rhetoric and Public Culture. She even assisted an Associate Professor in a course design for their graduate seminar based on her prior graduate classwork.
Committed to fostering professional development in her coursework, Fischer’s pedagogical techniques embrace active learning environments to thoroughly engage students in the classroom. She believes strongly that students can learn in innovative ways and deepen their connection to the course material when they are allowed to cater their research towards their own interests. Teaching her self-designed course in the spring of 2023, Like, Comment, and Subscribe: The Role of Social Media Influencers, Fischer embraced these techniques and delivered students a challenging and rewarding course. Many students shared the work they produced in this course with their friends, family members, and even on social media. Reflection is also a key component of her pedagogy. She strongly encourages students to reflect on their learning and its transferability, with many students volunteering to discuss how the skills they have learned in the course will apply to their professions.
Beyond the classroom, Fischer has served as a mentor for many students through her experience as a graduate tutor and facilitator in Writing Tutorial Services at Indiana University. She has participated in many pedogeological trainings and graduate cohorts dedicated towards the scholarly and personal reflection on teaching. And she has presented her work and pedagogical technique at multiple conferences and workshops within and outside of Indiana.
