Dr. Knoebel received a M.D. from IU School of Medicine in 1960 followed by internship and residency at the Medical Center. She was a USPHS Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in cardiology at IU and a visiting fellow at the National Institutes of Health. Her academic appointments began in 1964 as instructor in medicine continuing to her appointment as the Herman C. and Ellnora D. Krannert Professor of Medicine in 1977. She received an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from Goucher College in 1988.
Knoebel held various hospital appointments including Director of Cardiology, Marion County General Hospital, 1966-74; Acting Chief of Cardiology, Richard L. Roudebush Veterans Administration Medical Center, 1982-83, 1985-90, 1991; and Associate Director, Krannert Institute of Cardiology, 1974-90.
Dr. Knoebel held numerous committee positions in various professional societies including American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and President of the American College of Cardiology. She was Editor-in-Chief of a journal of the American College of Cardiology -- ACC Current Journal Review. Dr. Knoebel authored two children's books, Something to Crow About (1998) and Dr. Tootsie, and two medical novels, It Takes One to Know One (2001) and Still Waters Run Deep (2004).
