Professor Nakshatri received his Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine degree from University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, India, in 1982 and a PhD in Molecular Biology from Memorial University of New Foundland, Canada, in 1990. He joined IU in 1996 and became Marian J. Morrison Investigator of Breast Cancer Research in 2004 and Marian J. Morrison Professor in 2008. He is currently Professor of Surgery, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He is also co-leader of the Molecular and Environmental Carcinogenesis program of IU Simon Cancer Center.
Professor Nakshatri's major research interests are hormonal regulation of breast cancer, resistance of breast cancers to chemo and hormonal therapy, and mechanisms of breast cancer metastasis. His laboratory has identified a compound with anti-tumor activity, which is currently under clinical development.
Professor Nakshatri has received several awards including Inaugural Michael K Guest Award for Innovative Research from the Walther Oncology Institute. He is a member of several professional societies including American Association for Cancer Research and Endocrine Society. He is a grant reviewer for NIH, DOD, Susan G. Komen Foundation and several other national and international organizations; manuscript reviewer for ~20 national and international journals. He has authored or co-authored 80 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals.
