About Harold W. Jordan

During Harold W. Jordan's 41 years with IU, he served in many capacities. The influence of this sophisticated, perceptive gentleman touched the life of virtually every student on the Bloomington campus of Indiana University during his time there, even as an undergraduate student studying business in 1932.

Jordan's association with the Indiana Memorial Union dates from its opening days, when he worked as a student employee of the bookstore. That building became the center of his career, as he became bookstore manager, director of service enterprises, and the student union director. For 18 years he was chairman of the Indiana Residence Halls Committee, and from 1946 until his retirement in 1973, was chairman of the Auditorium Series Committee. Jordan was a former president of the National Association of College Stores, the Association of College Unions International and of the International Association of Concert and Festival Managers.

For ten years, Jordan was instrumental in building the permanent art collection of more than 400 works for the Indiana Memorial Union. He was also former president of the Hoosier Salon Patrons Association. Upon his retirement from IU, Jordan was given the Rocking Chair Award by Sigma Delta Chi Journalism society. Jordan was recognized further by his peers, with election to high professional offices, and by the University administration with the E. Ross Bartley Award for Administrative Excellence (1972), and the Distinguished Alumni Service Award (1979).
