Laurence Doolby Baker was a teacher, legislator, horticulturist, manufacturer, and civic leader. He was an eloquent voice in the halls of Indiana University's legislature, staunchly defending the cause of education. He was rich in understanding of the financial affairs of the state; as budget chairman, his advocacy of self-discipline in monetary matters as a condition basic to health and growth was of incalculable value. Baker's life was filled with achievement, and great love for IU, earning him affectionate recognition as a distinguished alum whose dedicated service was deeply appreciated.
