About Matthew Peterson

Matthew Peterson studied composition at the Gotland tonsättarskola in Visby, Sweden, Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, and St. Olaf College in Minnesota. He has served on the faculty of the Gotland tonsättarskola in Visby, Sweden, as well as on the faculty of Indiana University’s School of Music as an associate instructor of music notation and composition.

While teaching, Peterson also writes music for concerts and the stage. He has received commissions from musicians and ensembles from all over the United States, England and Sweden, and at least fifty of his works have been performed across Europe and North America. His works are diverse, ranging from songs of criminals and outcasts, to modern settings of sacred texts, to stunning orchestral soundscapes, and include two chamber operas and six orchestral scores, choral works, pieces for soloists, chamber ensembles, and electronic media, and post-rock songs for his band in Sweden.

Peterson has been the recipient of many awards. His most prestigious are from Broadcast Music Inc, American Society of Composers Authors and Publishers, Opera Vista, Indiana University, the Boston Choral Ensemble, the National Opera Association, Vocal Essence, and ensemble Chanticleer. He is also a Fulbright Scholar.
