Rhodes Scholar - 1919

About Ernest Baltzell

Ernest Baltzell graduated from high school at age 15, and completed the four-year course at IU in three years. He was Phi Beta Kappa and won the Foster Prize. He entered Harvard College in the fall of 1918 and became a 2nd lieutenant in the SATC. After the armistice he resumed his studies and was chosen as a Rhodes Scholar in 1920. He attended Queens' College, Oxford, where he received the Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1923. He practiced law professionally, first in New York, then in Indianapolis and published an article entitled, "The Place of the University in Higher Education (Is Indiana a University)" in 1932. He was elected to the IU Alumni Council and was listed in America's Young Men in 1935.
