John A. Woodcock earned his Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1971. Through the 70's he worked as a professional environmental activist and as a hospice volunteer through the 1980’s. He then joined the faculty at Indiana University, where he taught humanities courses on medical issues and workshops on writing autobiographies.
Woodcock retired from IU as an Associate Professor Emeritus in 2003, but continued to serve on the Bloomington Hospital’s Medical Ethics Committee, as well as offer literature and film-based workshops to various audiences on patient-physician relationships. Retirement also allowed Woodcock to finish a collection of autobiographies based on people whose lives had been positively affected by major stressors such as illness.
