W. Paul Helmke, Jr., born into the family legacy of Walter Edward and Walter Paul Helmke of Fort Wayne, Indiana on November 24, 1948, was former mayor of Fort Wayne. He graduated from IU in 1970 and was the president of the student government for the 1969-70 year.
Helmke, like his grandfather in 1975, and his father in 1980, was awarded the Ralph E. Broyles Medal in 2000. He was appointed President of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence in 2009 and works at the IU School of Public & Environmental Affairs and directs the Civic Leaders Living-Learning Center in Bloomington as of 2013.
Helmke received the IU Bicentennial Medal in August 2020 in recognition of his distinguished service of Indiana University.
