Robert Martin began his more than 40-year career at IUPUI in 1969 and earned his M.P.A. from the School of Public and Environmental Affairs in 1976. Over the course of his career, he worked in a variety of capacities, including Vice Chancellor for Administrative Affairs, Assistant to the University Controller, Director of Administrative Affairs, and Bursar. In 1995, Martin became the Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance, a position he held until 2007. Martin was instrumental in IUPUI's transition to NCAA Division I athletics and among the many other construction project he oversaw, the construction of the IUPUI Campus Center transformed the campus by creating a hub for student life.
In addition to his role at IUPUI, Martin has been on the Board of Directors for the Indiana Members Credit Union for more than 40 years and has served in several roles including secretary, chairman of the supervisory committee, chairman of the personnel committee, board advisor for public relations, and chair of the Indiana Members Foundation Board. Since 2006, Martin has been chairman of the board.
Upon his retirement from IUPUI, Martin established the Robert E. Martin Scholarship Fund with the Indiana Members Credit Union to support graduate students studying public finance or public management. Since 2010, the program has awarded more than $75,000 in scholarships impacting local students.
Robert Martin was presented an IUPUI 50th Anniversary Chancellor's Medallion by Chancellor Nasser H. Paydar on June 18, 2019, in recognition of his dedicated service to IUPUI, his visionary leadership of IUPUI's administrative and financial operations, his work in laying the foundation for IUPUI's entry into NCAA Division I athletics, his generous support of IUPUI students, and his role as champion of campus buildings including the opening of the Campus Center.
