Grant Van Huysen was a former professor of oral histopathology at IU School of Dentistry. He led research on tooth enamel solubility, using both powdered enamel and a new method employing tooth surfaces, which showed that tin fluoride would reduce enamel solubility more effectively than the more commonly used sodium fluoride. His work was supported by the U.S. Public Health Service, Pepsodent Division of Lever Brothers, and the Indiana State Board of Health.
Van Huysen was also a mentor to his former student, Joseph Muhler, who would go on to create the formula for Crest toothpaste.
