John W. Walls was a longtime civic leader in Indianapolis, having served as the senior deputy mayor of during Senator Richard Lugar's tenure as mayor. Walls also served as the first executive director of the Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee and the first chairman of the Indianapolis Public Transportation Corportation. He was involved in other organizations including the Metropolitan Development Commission and the United States Council of State Chambers of Commerce. Throughout his career as a civic leader, Walls received awards including three Sagamore of the Wabash, Indianapolis Jaycees Good Government Award, the Brotherhood Award from the National Conference of Christians and Jews, the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Indiana University College of Arts and Sciences, and a Community Service Award from the Christian Theological Seminary.
