Larry L. Cummings was the Carlson Professor of Strategic Management and Organization at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota, where he teaches and does research in the areas of organizational behavior, organizational theory, personnel, and management.
Dr. Cummings received an AB degree summa cum laude from Wabash College and graduate degrees from Indiana University -- an MBA in 1961 and a DBA in 1964. He held a Woodrow Wilson National Graduate Fellowship in psychology at the University of California, Berkeley in 1959-60, and a Ford Faculty Fellowship at Carnegie Mellon University in 1964. He has also taught at Columbia University, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Indiana University, and the University of British Columbia. Before he moved to Minnesota, he was the J. L. Kellogg Distinguished Research Professor of Organizational Behavior at Northwestern University.
Dr. Cummings was the author, coauthor, or editor of sixteen books, including Organizational Decision Making; Bargaining Behavior: An International Study; and Improving Human Resource Effectiveness. In addition, he has published more than 85 journal articles appearing in the Academy of Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly, and other leading scholarly journals.
A leader in numerous professional organizations, Dr. Cummings has also edited a variety of professional publications. He is a Fellow of the American Psychology Association, the Decision Sciences Institute, and the Academy of Management, and in 1979 was honored as one of three faculty members to serve as a Distinguished Scholar of Beta Gamma Sigma. Dr. Cummings is one of the founding members of the Society of Organizational Behavior and has served on its governing board and as chairman during 1989-90. He is a member of the board of governors of the Academy of Management and was the Academy's president in 1980-81.
Dr. Cummings has served as a consultant for several national and international corporations including the Cummins Engine Company, Dow Chemical Company, Eli Lilly Corporation, Samsonite Corporation, and Touche Ross. He teaches in several executive education seminars and programs and has lectured widely in Europe, Japan, Thailand, and South Africa.
Dr. Cummings lived in Minneapolis. He was the father of two grown children.
