Betsy Shuman-Moore is Co-Director of Litigation for Chicago Lawyers' Committee. She primarily works with the Fair Housing Project and the Hate Crimes Project. Since 1990, Shuman-Moore has supervised attorneys working for the Hate Crimes Project, the only comprehensive Midwest resource for hate crime survivors. The project provides pro bono assistance in a broad range of civil rights cases and legal representation for victims of hate crimes based on race, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, and disability.Some of Moore's accomplishments include co-writing and sponsoring amendments to the Illinois Human Rights Act to make the law substantially equivalent to the Fair Housing Act, trying various civil rights cases, and bringing some of the first sexual harassment in housing cases.
Prior to joining CLC, Shuman-Moore was a staff attorney and later Legal Director for the Leadership Council for Metropolitan Open Communities. She earned her law degree cum laude from Indiana University and her bachelor of social work degree from the University of Illinois. More also is a board member of the Chicago Area Fair Housing Alliance.
