Robert A. Garrett, M.D., is the Emeritus Professor of Urology and past chairman of the Department of Urology at the Indiana University School of Medicine. Garrett graduated from IUSM in 1943 and had completed 18 months of general surgery training in Cincinnati by 1946. In 1948, Garrett became the first student to graduate from the Department of Urology at IU. He soon joined the faculty at IUSM.
During his tenure at IUSM, Garrett published numerous articles such as "Urology at Indiana University", "Antireflux Surgery in Children" (1966), and "Use and Abuse of Antibiotics in UTI" (1968). Garrett was also one of the first doctors to use the ultrasound to examine and evaluate renal masses. In 1972, he retired as the chairman of the department. In 1998, the IUSM Class of 1943 established the Robert A. Garrett Scholarship in his honor. Garrett also was honored with a professorship in his name, the Robert A Garrett Professor of Pediatric Urologic Research at IUSM.
