Bill played basketball from 1949-51 and was the first black basketball player in the Big Ten. As a 6'2" center led IU to a 19-3 record and No. 2 national ranking in 1951. He was IU Most Valuable Player, All-Big Ten and All-American in 1951 season and led IU in scoring and rebounding three years. Garrett led Shelbyville to the Indiana state basketball championship in 1947 and coached Indianapolis Crispus Attucks to the state title in 1959.
