The Bloomington Worldwide Friendship (BWF) is a non-profit organization that promotes understanding and friendship between international students at Indiana University and residents of Monroe County. Established in 1953, BWF facilitates cross-cultural friendships by matching international students with community members and families. Additionally, they organize social interactions and cultural exchanges.
The organization offers various activities and resources to help international students get acquainted with the local culture and community. For instance, they provide information on safely navigating the streets of Bloomington and understanding traffic rules that may differ from students’ home countries. The different programs BWF has implemented have created a bridge between cultures that not only benefits international students to get acquainted with a new environment but makes Bloomington residents more culturally competent.
In recognition of their commitment to foster a welcoming environment for all students allowing free expression of oneself, the Bloomington Worldwide Friendship, Inc., was presented with the Distinguished International Service Award by Patrick O’Meara in 2001.
