- IU Indianapolis Spirit of Philanthropy Award - 2012
Professor Richard "Dick" Curtis received his Th.B. from Northern Baptist College in 1950. He completed his MS at Purdue in 1951 and his PhD there in 1954. Dr. Curtis served as a founding faculty member of the IU School of Liberal Arts’ Communication Studies Department. His distinguished career was marked by service as department chair.
Dr. Curtis and his wife, Beth, founded the Robert and Dana Curtis Memorial Oratorical Contest (CMOC), in honor of Dr. Curtis' two brothers who were killed at war. The CMOC challenges student competitors to study and present ideas for peaceful resolution to conflict and awards significant scholarships to the top speakers. The Curtis’ vision resulted in a new themed learning community for undergraduates focusing on conflict resolution at IUPUI that culminates in the CMOC at semester’s end.
Dr. Curtis and his wife received a 2012 Spirit of Philanthropy Award in honor of their commitment to the future, not only through education, but in their dedication to a world of peace. Dr. Curtis was joined by his sons at the luncheon to accept the honor as a tribute to his wife and their mother, Beth.
