About Brian Schottlaender

Brian Schottlaender (MLS '80) is the Audrey Geisel University Librarian at UC San Diego. Schottlaender received his Masters in Library Science from IU in 1980 after earning his BA in German at the University of Texas at Austin. He then completed a Senior Fellowship at Palmer School of Library and Information Science at Long Island University.

Since joining the UCSD staff in 1999, he has provided exceptional leadership to make the Library more focused, efficient, and nimble. He's also widely regarded as a national leader in such efforts. Over the past decade Schottlaender has seen the UCSD Library's endowments grow by nearly 50 percent, and journal offerings have grown by more than 100 percent. He was critical to developing UCSD's role in a partnership with Google to build its global book digitalization project, and his leadership has helped UCSD serve as a key cog in the Pacific Rim Digital Library Alliance. Schottlaender has been honored with a number of prestigious awards from the American Library Association, including the Margaret Mann Citation, the Ross Atkinson Lifetime Achievement Award, the Hugh C. Atkinson Memorial Award, and the Melvil Dewey Medal, the highest honor the organization can bestow. Prior to his position at UCSD, he worked at UCLA, the University of Arizona, and Indiana University. He has served on SoIC's Dean's Advisory Council since 2012.
